Celebrating 30 Years
JAIMS would like to wish a happy New Year to all alumni,
friends, and partners. This year marks a significant milestone as JAIMS
celebrates its 30th year of connecting careers, cultures, and people.
| |

|
|
Thirty years ago, JAIMS was the first nonprofit
educational institution established in the United States by a Japanese
corporation. Established in 1972 by Fujitsu Limited, JAIMS was the
vision of then Fujitsu President Yoshimitsu Kohra. At the time,
JAIMS focused primarily on cross-cultural education between Japan
and the United States. Through Kohraęs vision and the commitment
of JAIMSę faculty and staff to respond to timely issues of globalization,
JAIMS has broadened its scope from serving Japan and the U.S. to
also serving the Asia-Pacific.
|
As JAIMS looks to its future in
the new millennium, it will continue to be at the forefront of intercultural
management education. JAIMS believes that in the aftermath of September
11th, there is a heightened need for teaching values of civility and responsibility
to face tomorrowęs uncertain world. JAIMS will seek to strengthen its
values- and skills-based program agenda to focus on intercultural understanding
and cross-cultural communications as a vehicle for global understanding.
In addition to attracting participants
to its campus, JAIMS will connect with its participants through on-line
and on-site learning. JAIMS will also provide services to alumni and rely
upon them to help build an endowment to educate and train effective leaders
in this interdependent global economy.
Since its inception, JAIMS has
had over 19,700 participants pass through its programs and seminars. Accordingly,
JAIMS expects many participants for its 30th anniversary activities planned
throughout the year.
Planned activities include an alumni
conference, conference dinners, nomination and presentation of the Distinguished
Alumni Award, and a special closing event during JEMBA/CHEMBA graduation
ceremonies in Tokyo. Also scheduled is an open house featuring the newly
renovated Takuma Yamamoto e-Learning Center and
an overview of the i-Campus Program.
All alumni, trustees, staff, students,
friends, and partners are invited to join in the celebrations, so please
join JAIMS in its 30th anniversary and look to the calendar of events
to help plan your schedule. Also, included in this issue of Global Horizons
are instructions for Distinguished Alumni Award nominations. Even if you
cannot join the activities, please contribute to the celebration by sending
in your nomination for the most distinguished alumni.
2002 will be a year of rejuvenating
the JAIMS family spirit. Hopefully, you will join the celebrations and
let JAIMS thank you for your commitment to JAIMS and its vision. Mahalo,
and let the celebrations begin!

JAIMS
in the 21st Century
A Message from JAIMS President Glenn Miyataki
Aloha and happy New Year to our trustees, Fujitsu,
alumni, former JAIMS staff, students, partners, and friends:
On behalf of JAIMS, may we begin this new year with
a message of peace, hope, and goodwill for the people of the world. As
we share feelings of sorrow and empathy with the victims and families
of the September 11th terrorist tragedy, we offer our thanks to the many
alumni and friends from abroad who expressed their concerns to our staff.
The world, including the educational sector, has changed forever; however,
we are resolved to find new ways to educate and train our participants
and alumni.
We have restructured JAIMS for the 21st century to
make us more nimble, responsive, and creative in developing a program
agenda that will advance the legacy of our Fujitsu founders. When they
established JAIMS in beautiful Hawaii Kai, little did they realize that
their vision of bringing peoples of different countries together to study
and understand each othersę culture would continue so strongly in the
new millennium. As a pioneer, JAIMS has focused on intercultural management
education since its inception and will continue to do so in the 21st century
with expanded attention toward the development of leaders who will be
able to function effectively among different cultural settings.
January 13, 2002, marked the official 30th birthday
of JAIMS, and we are calling upon our alumni, trustees, staff, students,
and friends, to join in the celebration of this milestone. We encourage
you to make your plans early to come to Hawaii during the first week of
July 2002 to participate in the 30th Anniversary Celebration and Alumni
Conference and to share fond memories of your time at JAIMS. Please turn
your dream of returning to Hawaii into a reality this summer. It will
be wonderful for classmates who havenęt seen each other for a while to
get together and talk of old times and of the road ahead.
Through total excellence and maximum participation,
let us renew our commitment and take JAIMS to higher levels of achievement.
The entire staff in Hawaii Kai
and the JAIMS Japan staff in Tokyo join me in wishing all of you a safe
and healthy New Year and a promising future.
With kindest regards and mahalo,
Glenn K. Miyataki,
Ph.D. President, JAIMS

Open House Preview: The Takuma Yamamoto e-Learning
Center During Summer 2001, JAIMS completed the renovations on the old
library and student lounge areas of the building. The result was the Takuma
Yamamoto e-Learning Center, a technology-based services center offering
JAIMS participants a comfortable learning environment.
| |
The centeręs design is partly based
on ideas generated from a JAIMS sponsored renovation design contest
for architecture students at Hawaii colleges and universities. The
contest was held to ensure that the –student perspective” was reflected
in the renovations. |
|

The Takuma Yamamoto e-Learning
Center |
The center features well-lit open-space workstations,
study carrels, private and semiprivate group-study areas, and a media
lab with A/V equipment. Computer workstations now permeate the entire
institute, and the entire building features wireless network connectivity.
Resources also include over 2,500 printed resources searchable by an on-line
catalog; online business-related databases featuring full-text articles
and citations to over 1,000 business periodicals; and internship and research
reports of former students in both hard copy and online formats. The centeręs
resources are available to JAIMS participants, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Members of the community may access select resources by appointment only.
The
JAIMS Endowment Fund
Building Global Leaders for the 21st Century
In commemoration of its 30th anniversary, JAIMS is
soon launching its educational endowment campaign to continue –building
global leaders for the 21st century.” Past JAIMS presidents, Hideto Kono
and Dr. Fujio Matsuda, are spearheading the two-year effort from January
2002 through December 2003 as honorary co-chairs. They will be assisted
by a 22-member steering committee led by JAIMS alumni and staff co-chairs
Koshiro Kitazato, Kyoko Someya, and John Cheuck.
In building global leaders, current JAIMS president,
Glenn Miyataki, indicates that the campaign will:
« Help to support a number of scholarships for global
prospects;
« Bring prestigious faculty and executives to Hawaii
for speaking engagements; and
« Enhance instructional excellence through IT applications.
Shortly, the campaign will be sending out letters
and we hope that our partners and corporate friends and supporters will
join with our trustees, staff, and alumni to build an ongoing legacy for
the development of leaders in this context of globalization.
Study
Meeting on Health Care Management for an Aging Society
A Study Meeting on Health Care Management for an Aging
Society sponsored by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) and the
State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism
(DBED&T) was held at Ala Moana Hotel and JAIMS from December 3 to 7, 2001.
Seventeen participants from 14 different countries made their country
presentation and attended lectures and tours from Hawaii health care experts
at JAIMS and various health care sites.
Lectures covered various aspects of elderly care including
Medicare and Medicaid, national and state policies, private and public
health care facilities, and trends in medical technology. Also included
were visits to Hawaii medical sites such as Arcadia Retirement Residence,
Hospice Hawaii, and Kuakini Hospital where tours were conducted of their
elderly care facilities.
JAIMS facilitated the training of the first group
of health professionals in 1997.
New
Series Connects Students with Hawaii Business Leaders
A new program has been created to connect JAIMS students
with prominent and influential business leaders in the Hawaii community.
Called the JAIMS Boardroom Series, this program provides the opportunity
for the Japan-focused MBA (JEMBA), China-focused
MBA (CHEMBA), and Intercultural Management
Program (ICMP) classes to visit the boardroom of a major company or
organization and attend a discussion with the chair, chief executive officer,
president, or chief operating officer of the company.
The series officially began last November when Linus
Kan, manager of JAIMSę Global Business Program led the ICMP 2001 Fall
class to the Hawaii Convention Center to meet Tony Vericella, CEO and
president of the Hawaii Visitoręs and Convention Bureau (HVCB).
In charge of leading Hawaiięs main industry of tourism,
Vericella discussed the HVCBęs marketing strategy in relation to the September
11th terrorist attacks. The ICMP participants were then able to ask Vericella
questions and were treated to a tour of Hawaiięs high-tech convention
center.
–The JAIMS Boardroom Series is an excellent opportunity
to gain an audience with business community leaders, such as Mr. Vericella,
and learn about their respective industries and leadership styles,” said
Kan.
| |
Walter Dods |
|
Later in November, the 2001-2002
JEMBA and CHEMBA class along with Akio Nakazawa, manager of the Japan
Business Program, and Yen Chun, manager of the China Business Program,
visited the Boardroom of BancWest with Walter Dods, chairman and CEO
of BancWestŔŔlocally known as First Hawaiian Bank.
|
Dods spoke to the students on the bankęs merger (between
BNP of France and BancWest), Hawaiięs economy, and even JAIMS.
–Ięm always amazed at Fujitsuęs commitment in Hawaii
by investing so much money in cross-cultural education through JAIMS,”
he said, –The experiences you take with you (as students) stay with you
throughout your life.”
The JAIMS Boardroom Series was created to give JAIMS
students a close-up view of business industry leaders and their experiences
in Hawaii. Each ICMP class will have one major visit during their term
while each JEMBA and CHEMBA class will have one visit in the fall and
one in the spring.
Delegation
from Guangdong Province Visits JAIMS
On December 7, 2001, JAIMS welcomed a delegation from
Guangdong Province in China. The ten members of the delegation hailed
from the top levels of Guangdong government, finance, trade, research,
and education. JEMBA and CHEMBA participants were fortunate enough to
interact with the delegation and make important ties with prominent officials
from the economically robust province.
Led by Fu Lang, director general of the Foreign Affairs
Office, the delegation gave an informative presentation on Guangdong and
later fielded questions from JAIMS students on topics ranging from the
WTO, intellectual property protection in China, business opportunities,
and potential internships in Guangdong.
–The visit from the delegation was a welcomed and
appreciated opportunity for JAIMS to expand its network of partners and
friends, and for our students to get first-hand information about an important
and growing economic province in China,” said Blair Odo, JAIMSę vice president
for Academic Affairs.
The delegation is currently studying at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Business at Manoa for a year until
August 2002. JAIMS invited the delegation to visit in order to establish
a relationship with JAIMS participants for networking and possible internship
opportunities.

|
–Ięm glad that
Joey is the first recipient of this prestigious award,” said Glenn
