New Horizons
A Message from JAIMS President Glenn Miyataki
On behalf of our faculty and staff here at JAIMS,
it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the newest edition of
Global Horizons. We hope you notice our spring edition has been
rejuvenated in the spirit of the season with a new layout and reorganization
of materials. This change is just a small example of what JAIMS
will go through as we look ahead in this new millennium.
Already, we are implementing initiatives to
strive toward our vision of being a leading institute in intercultural
management education. This year we have seen the first recipient
of JAIMSę Business Plan Competition Award,
and we will soon see JAIMSę new e-Learning Center and iCampus
online program. Next year is JAIMSę 30th anniversary and we are
already planning the activities and events around this special occasion.
Although technology will undoubtedly help us
to grow in new ways, I believe that our most important concern for
the future is our renewed commitment to strengthen ties with our
participants, alumni, internship companies, partners, homestay families,
and our friends and supporters. Even with a network of graduates
spanning the globe, our family is an incredibly close-knit community.
I hope you will join us in the new –Horizons” of the millennium
as JAIMS continues to reach out beyond our shores to Asia, the mainland
U.S., and other continents.
JAIMS
iCampus Being Developed
JAIMS is
now developing its distance education program to offer online continuing
education to alumni and other business professionals who prefer
the convenience of –anytime, anywhere” learning. Called the –JAIMS
iCampus,” indicating a virtual campus on the Internet, this
new initiative is scheduled to begin with a few courses in summer
2001. The iCampus will use the Internet to deliver noncredit courses
to those who want to update their skills to thrive in the new knowledge-based
economy.
–We are excited
to explore how the iCampus can serve our alumni and broaden other
participantsę access to intercultural education,” said Blair Odo,
JAIMS vice president for academic affairs. –In the future weęll
also consider supplementing existing courses and enhancing our existing
academic programs.”
In general,
students who have access to a computer with a Web browser can attend
class and network with classmates regardless of their location.
Students can also attend class when itęs convenient--before or after
work and on weekends. Initially, all classes will be led by instructors
and offered in English. Course topics will be in the areas of intercultural
business, communication, information technology, and other areas
as identified by the feedback JAIMS receives. Course costs are expected
to be equivalent to in-class courses that are similar in subject
and length.

Japan and Hawaii Medical Professionals Convene to Learn About Managed
Health Care
Last
October, health care professionals from 20 medical facilities in
Honolulu traded management ideas with 23 health care professionals
from Japan who were here in Hawaii for a two-week program about
the American managed health care system.
The Intercultural
Health Care Management Program (IHCMP), a cooperative program of
JAIMS and Medical Consultants Corporation (MCC) of AZWELL Co., Ltd.
in Nagoya, Japan ran from October 9th through the 20th. Participants
included executives, directors, and physicians from 18 different
health care organizations and hospitals in Japan.
–With the
growing interest in wellness and integrative medicine that blends
Eastern and Western medical practices, intercultural management
training becomes increasingly vital,” remarked JAIMS Budget/Seminars
Manager Yutaka Hasegawa. –This program provides that cross-cultural
opportunity for the participants and the instructors and hospitals
involved to learn about each otheręs health care system and discover
ways to improve it.”
Tsutomu Araseki,
executive director of MCC, said he is seeing efforts to improve
the health care system in Japan. He noted that the IHCMP enables
the health care professionals from Japan to address issues of quality
control and cost saving as they strive to implement medical reform
in Japan by March 2002.
–It will be of great help in health care management
for us to learn the actual circumstances of managed care in the
U.S. and how to apply and adopt it to our system,” Araseki said.
JAIMS and
MCC developed IHCMP and trained the first group of health care professionals
from Japan in 1997. Similar to the inaugural program, this program
included classes at JAIMS in health care management taught by health
care professionals and executives and site visits to eight participating
medical facilities in Hawaii.
The Inaugural ICMP Business Plan Competition
a Success
The JAIMS
Intercultural Management Program (ICMP) Fall 2000 class held its
inaugural Business Plan Competition on January 9, 2001. Twenty-one
ICMP participants presented their original business plans to an
audience and a panel of judges to determine the most exemplary presentation
by the end of the day.
The event
was especially significant because it was the first ICMP Business
Plan Competition to be held. Linus Kan, manager of Academic Programs
at JAIMS, noted that previously, ICMP held a Speech Competition
where participants spoke on a topic they chose.
–With the
introduction of the entrepreneurship course,” he said, –we felt
it would be more appropriate to have a business plan competition
that tests participantsę application of classroom lessons and their
presentation [and] speaking ability, both of which are very important
workplace skills.”
Participants
were judged according to the content of their presentation, the
use of business concepts, originality, organization, the feasibility
of their plan, presentation skills, and their responses to audience
questions.
–It was very
enlightening,” said judge Steve Yoshihara, president and principal
broker for Pacific Consultants Inc. –It was very interesting to
be part of [the] classÄ all did very well.”

Although the judges agreed
it was a difficult decision, the award for first place was
presented to Yasuhito Kusa for his Bagus Gambar Architecture
Drawing Firm business plan.
Although
excited about the win, Kusa credited his success in part to
his instructors. –My presentation consisted of a lot of skills
taught to me in ICMP classes,” he said.

As the best

The ICMP
Business Plan Award is one in a series of awards presented to ICMP
students during their final week of classes.

4, 2000, Glenn Miyataki, JAIMS president, personally accepted the
Consul General of Japanęs Commendation in recognition of JAIMSę
commitment toward the development of human and economic development
within the Asia Pacific region.
–This commendation

the leadership of our trustees and past presidents, our dedicated
faculty and staff, the community in Hawaii Kai, and the many organizations
and agencies in Hawaii that have supported our efforts,” remarked
Miyataki in an acceptance speech.

The
JAIMS China Seminar Series
Due to China
joining the World Trade Organization this year, the World Bank has
predicted that China will be the largest economy in the world by
2010. With this in mind, beginning April 12, 2001, JAIMS will host
a series of seminars focusing on fundamental and advanced concepts
for doing business with and within China.
The JAIMS
China Seminar Series will feature eight speakers, all experts in
their fields, who have extensive experience in working with the
Chinese market in various ways.
Located at
the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, the series will span four
weeks and is open to registered participants and sponsors in the
local community.
Speakers
in the fields of law, architecture, culture, political science,
and China business practices will offer tremendous opportunities
to participants.
–For those who
wish to enter the China market, either doing business with Chinese companies
or selling products and services to Chinese consumers, this series is
an essential resource,” said Yen Chun, JAIMS Business Mandarin Program
manager.
Executive
Director of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Japan Limited Visits JAIMS
At the start
of the new year, Japan-focused MBA (JEMBA) and China-focused MBA
(CHEMBA) students were treated to a luncheon with guest speaker
Benjamin Bystrom, executive director for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter
Japan Limited.
Bystrom discussed
much of his experiences and common duties within Morgan Stanley
Dean Witter, imparting significant insights into the world of Tokyo
finance to the attentive JAIMS students. With ten years of experience
in Japanęs capital markets, Bystrom was able to impart his knowledge
of bond issues, investment banking, and the securitization of loans
within the context of Japanęs current and future economy.
One of the
most crucial pieces of advice he left students with is to specialize
their skills and bring –something different” to the Asian market
in order to get their foot in the door and build a foundation for
a long and successful career.
Bystrom,
himself, specializes in structured finance and securitization which
has lead him to hold prominent positions in Tokyo at financial institutions
such as Moodyęs Investors Service and Merrill Lynch. He will soon
be expanding his role at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter to encompass
more regions in Asia.
