The Akira and Mari Ohtomo Entrepreneurial Spirit
Award Finds Its First Recipient
HONOLULU —
On November 16th, at Fujitsu Limited headquarters in Tokyo,
the Akira and Mari Ohtomo Entrepreneurial Spirit Award was presented
to its first recipient, Joseph Kushi, the son of Mrs. Marlene Kushi
of Maui. The award was presented to Kushi during commencement ceremonies
of the recent Japan-focused
Master of Business Administration (JEMBA) and the China-focused
Master of Business Administration (CHEMBA) programs held by
the Japan-America Institute of Management Science (JAIMS) and the
University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Business Administration.
The committee responsible for deciding
the award recipient found Kushi to be "an outstanding student who
exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit necessary for success in
today's global markets."As part of the award, Kushi received a $5,000
scholarship for his three month JEMBA internship at Queen's Medical
Center.
Akira and Mari Ohtomo, founders
of the award, were on hand to personally commend Kushi on his success.
"We feel that the entrepreneurial spirit is one of the critical
elements in today's global business world," Mr. Ohtomo said. "Through
this scholarship, we would like to give students who exemplify this
type of spirit the encouragement to start their own business or
work for a start-up company."
Along with his classmates, Kushi
was also awarded the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree
and the Japan-focused Management Certificate. These latest successes
only add to Kushi's solid credentials as a cross-cultural leader;
he is already proficient in Japanese, holds a B.A. in East Asian
Studies from Washington University, and has participated in the
Stanford University Study Abroad Program in Kyoto.
"I'm glad that Joey is the first
recipient of this prestigious award," said Glenn Miyataki, president
of JAIMS, "Through his determination and leadership, he has demonstrated
that he has what it takes to excel in a global environment. The
JAIMS staff is so proud of him for this achievement."
The Akira and Mari Ohtomo Entrepreneurial
Spirit Award was founded last year by Akira Ohtomo, chairman and
CEO of Pan Pacific Enterprises Inc. in Japan, and his wife, Mari
Yoshimura, a well-known figure in Japan's film and television industry.
The JEMBA and CHEMBA programs are
full-time, 15-month AACSB-accredited MBA programs offered by the
partnership of JAIMS and the University of Hawaii at Manoa College
of Business Administration. Both programs provide management training
within the broader cultural, macroeconomic and political context
governing international business in either Japan or China. JAIMS,
a pioneer in intercultural management education, is a private, nonprofit
postgraduate institute that prepares global managers through programs
in intercultural business management and business language and seminars
in information technology and cross-cultural communications. Its
mission is to contribute to the human and economic development of
the Asia-Pacific region by educating and training managers to be
effective leaders in an increasingly interdependent economy. Established
in 1972 by Fujitsu Ltd., JAIMS is located in Hawaii Kai and has
a support office in Tokyo.
