Chairman and CEO of Milai Vision, Inc. on Leadership
HONOLULU —
On November 6, Mark Komatsu, chairman & CEO of Milai Vision,
Inc., paid a special visit to JAIMS to speak to the current Intercultural
Management Program (ICMP) participants. The session, entitled
Leadership: Businesses and Changes in Adversity provided
Komatsu the opportunity to impart his knowledge and experience to
ICMP participants so that they can succeed in what he calls these
"great yet difficult times."
With extensive experience working in both Japan
and the U.S., Komatsu discovered that many people still think of
leadership and management as being interchangeable words. He wanted
to make clear that they are distinct in a very important way.
"For me, leadership is doing the right thing,"
Komatsu related, "Management is doing it the right way."
According to Komatsu, although an action may
be completed the right way through proper management, it may not
be the right thing. "Leadership is more important, whether you know
it or not."
Komatsu, himself, is no stranger to leadership.
He has held several top-level positions in multi-billion dollar
corporations and start-up organizations and carries with him experience
in strategic planning, business development, operations, and organizational
development within many industries.
While he holds many successes to his name, Komatsu
was sure to point out that he is also familiar to failure. He says
that no one is immune to failure and that it is the experience of
failure that makes one stronger.
"Failure is only failure when you give up. When
you don't give up, it is only a process."
As his closing comment to the ICMP class, Komatsu
stressed that taking action is always the most crucial step to successful
leadership, regardless of circumstance.
"Leadership is nothing but doing it," Komatsu
said, "If you really want to do it, do it. Making the decision and
taking action is the most important thing. Don't be afraid of failure
or criticism."
Masayuki "Mark" Komatsu is the founder of Milai
Vision, Inc. based in Honolulu, Hawaii which offers professional
services to create world-class organizations. In addition, he has
served as global CEO and a director for Broadform, Inc., a New York-based
e-commerce start-up company. Prior to Broadform, Komatsu was the
president and a director of Rexall Showcase Japan based in Tokyo.
Komatsu has also been employed in high-level positions at Adaptec
Japan Limited, MET Corporation, AMP Japan, and Clayton Industries.
