Telephone Service

To obtain telephone service, you may call Hawaiian Telcom Customer Service (Tel: 643-3456, Mon-Sat). You should plan to spend approximately 15-30 minutes speaking with a customer service representative from Hawaiian Telcom. The following information may be required:

  • Name
  • Home address in Honolulu
  • Social security number or passport number
  • The name, address and telephone number of a personal reference (a JAIMS employee who is a permanent resident of Hawaii can act as your personal reference)
  • If you are employed (locally or in your home country), you will need to provide the name, address and telephone number of your employer, as well as your position and the number of years you have been employed there
  • If you are a student only (not employed locally or in your home country), acknowledge whether you are a full-time or part-time student
  • A tentative telephone number where you can be reached (use your host family's telephone number; if you live independently, you may, in this instance, use the JAIMS telephone number)
  • The address where you would like your monthly bill sent (if different from your home address in Honolulu)
  • Decide whether you wish to order any special services such as call-waiting, touch-tone service, wonder phone, or smart ring. Decide whether you would like your telephone number listed in the public telephone directory
  • Decide which telephone company you prefer to use for neighbor island and long-distance calls (Hawaiian Telcom, AT&T, MCI, Sprint, etc.)

Service will begin within a few days after making proper arrangements. You will be required to pay a deposit and the installation fee. The monthly charge will vary depending upon the fees for special services and long-distance telephone calls. If it is necessary for a technician to go to your residence to install a telephone jack, an additional charge will be assessed.

A telephone is available in the JAIMS lounge on the second floor for local calls only. To make a call, push "9" then the number. A pay telephone is located in the lobby for long distance calls. Do not disclose the JAIMS telephone number for personal calls.

An International Operator Direct Connection (IODC) telephone is also available in the lounge. International long-distance calls may be either charged to a calling card or charged collect to the called party.

Electricity

To request electric service, you may call the Hawaiian Electric Company (Tel: 548-7311), Monday-Friday, 6:30 am-9:00 pm. The person paying the bill must make the call, and the call must be placed two working days before the date you would like the electricity turned on. The following information may be necessary:

  • Name
  • Home address in Honolulu (This address should be the same as the address where you want the electric service installed.)
  • Social security number or passport number
  • The name, address and telephone number of a personal reference (a JAIMS employee who is a permanent resident of Hawaii can act as your personal reference)
  • If you are employed (locally or in your home country), you will need to provide the name, address and telephone number of your employer, as well as your position and the number of years you have been employed there
  • A tentative telephone number where you can be reached (use your host family's telephone number; if you live independently, you may, in this instance, use the JAIMS telephone number)
  • The address where you would like your monthly bill sent (if different from your home address in Honolulu)

A deposit and a non-refundable service activation fee will be assessed. The deposit is refundable and will be credited to the electric bill when you end the service.

You are allowed 15 days to pay the deposit after receiving the bill. If, for some reason, the individual is unable to make the payment, he or she may request an extension. Service may be turned off if payment is not made within 15 days and an extension is not requested.
